Use the fluorescent bulbs all throughout you house. It does help. They last for years and use a fraction of the electricity.
Make sure all plumbing doesn't leak. And you can do things to your toilets and showers so they don't use so much water. Only use cold water when doing laundry. And if you can, put a barrel next to a rain gutter and keep water there for the garden. You can use solar energy for heating a pool. Start a compost pile in your yard to recycle your yard debris. The list is long.
