There is a difference and I usually use the term leftist instead of liberal but the truth is that the leftist are trying to hide behind the term liberal rather than admiting to what they truly are after, socialism.

For those who cannot read well, I did NOT say all liberals where socialists, I said socialists were hiding behind the term liberal. BIG DIFFERENCE

"The far left" is a an imaginary bogeyman created by "the far right" (see a pattern here?) to impugn the character of the opposition.

Now here is where it gets complicated - there is a far left and a far right. In America these groups do not represent the mainstream thinking of their political comrades.

The left generally wants change, the right generally wants to support tradition hence the terms liberal and/progressive or conservative.

At their best the progressives/liberals will help do away with outmoded or repressive institutions or values such as slavery.

At their best conservatives will work very hard to uphold the best a society has to offer - such as our constitutional rights.

The proper derogatory term for a far left leaning individual is a radical - one who simply wishes to destroy the existing structure. The Symbionese Liberation Army were radicals

The proper derogatory term for a far right individual is reactionary - someone who violently defends "the old ways" no matter what - the KKK are reactionaries as is Al-Qaeda.

Obviously this sketch is nowhere near complete and there are nuances and wrinkles that make these labels less than useful at times.

There's a difference between liberality and liberalism as a political movement.

I believe there is a huge difference. The far left cannot accept things as they are so the conspiracies begin and get worse and more complex to try an justify something that is obvious. Kinda like a lie, then you have to make more lies to cover for the first. Eventually the lies become so outrageous that everyone but themselves can see the truth.

Yes.

Liberals are capitalistic, that is, they believe in capitalism. (That doesn't mean they think that the direction we are now going, where only the rich make money, and everyone else starves, is good; but that a fair version of capitalism is good.) They do tend to want a limited "socialism" in a sense, as they think it's wrong to let people starve. They believe in the progressive income tax.

FDR was a liberal, though not a socialist.

The far left are socialists, and see capitalism as fundamentally flawed.

The basic belief of the left is class warfare. The moderate, liberal wing believes that governmental remedies should provide for those who have been exploited by an unfair system. The radical far-left takes class warfare to the limit, devising all types of evil motives and conspiracies attributable to the rich.

Yes: the 'far left's represent one kind of liberalism--EXTREME liberalism. You can advocate liberalism without being far left...it's a matter of degree.

In politics, left-wing, political left, leftism, or simply the left, are terms that refer (with no particular precision) to the segment of the political spectrum typically associated with the 4 strains of socialism: Social-democrats, Greens, Communists and Anarchists.

Which of these left movements do you mean?

I am a liberal but don't agree with those on the extreme left, just as many conservatives don't agree with those on the extreme right.
