It is a real superstition. As such, it has about as much effect as any superstition, which is as much as you allow it.

Nor is there really any need to resort to the supernatural to explain stories you may hear about it. It is natural that a certain amount of any event will result in disaster. If you are LOOKING for disaster, you are likely to see it all around (psychologists call this 'expectation'). And if you treat people in a certain way, they will tend to act that out (if you're tense and upset, they quickly become tense and upset too, this is the 'Pygmalion effect').

In other words, it's a lot like some aspects of voodoo and the placebo effect. If you BELIEVE something will happen, often you MAKE it happen without realizing it.
