why does nitric oxide(NO) not genereally form in the atmosphere but is formed in the internal combustion engine of an automobile or during a lightning storm.

Because it is an endothermic reaction. Heat occurs on the left hand side of the equation. So you need theheat ofcombustion or of lightning.

the direct combination of O2 and N2 occurs only at very high temperatures such as near a lightning bolt.
