I mean the name isn't terrible but 2 word team names never sound as good. And their purpose of naming the team after the blue jackets in the Civil War is all well and good, but when you get right down to it it's sorta lame...

I think they should change it, other sports team have done it before(Tampa Bay Devil Rays of MLB are shortening their name to just "Rays", or so I hear) so it could happen

Do you think they should and WILL change their name eventually?

Let me guess................We'll also change the name of the Toronto Maple Leafs? the Detroit Red Wings? the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish? the University of North Carolina Tar Heels? The Boston Red Sox? The Chicago White Sox? The Duke University Blue Devils?

Aside from the Devil Rays...................I really don't see a precedence for such a move

Jaguar was on the right track but the Blue Jacket name has dual historical purpose. During the Revolutionary War era there was a Shawnee war chief named Blue Jacket who fought vigourously for his tribe's land rights. Also, the area in and around Columbus was the largest manufacturer of the Union Army's blue uniforms during the Civil War. It is in memory of the war that the team was named. As far as their mascot "Stinger" being a bee, I'm not sure aboot his his origins thanks Jaguar. I lived in central Ohio for a few years. You could say I learned a thing or two living there. lol Heavy- Sorry my friend, good to see you around. Good word on Stinger. It's been so long I forgot the connection. lol

A quick and general FYI regarding the Blue Jackets name:
The name has dual historical purpose.

From a historical perspective, I'm for keeping the name.

The Devil Rays have officially changed the nickname to Rays, and I agree that names can be too long in some cases.

I am still confused about what Blue Jackets means. I think it is in reference to the Civil War. But I would have chosen a name that is better in my opinion. One of my favorite names was that of the old WHA team that played in Cleveland called the Crusaders.

I suppose that I should be thankful that a much worse abomination of nicknames wasn't used. I'm tired of names that end with Rox, Dawgz, Kats, or have a letter intentionally left out like Xplosion. And I'd love to ask the people that decide which nickname the team will use what is wrong with a name that ends with an "S"?

I have been proud of the team since they started.The marketing has been fuzzy though.If I ,as a resident of Ohio and fan of the team didn't get all the underling meanings why would the rest of the teams or the other fans?
The logo and marketing has been improved.We used to be made fun of for our old Christmas tree logo.If you don't know what I mean see our 1st jersey.It looks like a tree with a star on top.Anyway-I vote to keep the name.Its ingrained in me now.

To Dazzle: Whats wrong with you, you can't change the name of an original six team. The Blue Jackets are a new team with no history so thats a different story.

Hear, Hear!!

Of course other teams have gone through that over the years.

Knicks = Knickerbockers
Mets = Metropolitans
Twins = Twin Cities

I'm sure there are more, maybe some of the other folks can add to it. But yea, Blue Jackets is pretty lame.
