In reference to the industry, Networking Hardware, are there any substitutes for this product/ service (firewalls, routers,etc..).. i can not think of one to date. Anyone know of one? Thanks!

Not sure I understand your question? Do you mean can you operate a network without specific pieces of hardware that perform those functions? Hmmm not really.

The network hardware, over time, like most "technology" has pounded more stuff in a 10# bag.

In the 1980's when networking as we know it today started there were special purpose devices that performed each function. As time has moved forward many of the applications have migrated into multi-application pieces of equipment. For example, it's common for routers today to have a stateful firewall, network address translation, optimazation features (like compression), integrated WAN technologies etc... In the first days of routers they were Ethernet x Ethernet and routed only.
