Ions can have either a positive or a negaive charge. A "positive" test result for nearly anything means that the item being tested for is found to be present.

It is used to determine the makeup of an unknown substance. We just did a lab on this last week. You compare the results of known reactions to an unknown substance to determine whether or not the unknown contains the specific ion. If the unknown has the same reaction as the reaction for the known ion, the unknown has it as well.
