Depending on how old your home is, they didn't really have "grounding". In older homes that are not updated, they have two-pronged outlets. So yes, they were not grounded. In "newer" homes, whenever a new installation or new panel is put in, a copper ground rod is install in the ground in the area approx. in the near location of where the panel is. The ground rod is 8 foot long and is driven all the way into the ground. If you look outside where your service entrance cable goes into the house,(the wire that comes from the pole into the house), Check to see if there is a green or bare wire coming from the panel and going through the house to the outside and into the ground. If you have a friend who knows a little bit about it, he might be able to help you with this. Feel free to contact me through IM or e-mail. Good Luck and I hope all goes well!!!

Check any visible wiring.
Chances are that it's armored cable, and
the cable armor furnishes a ground.
If your outlet boxes are steel, this is almost
certainly the case.
Three pronged outlets, with clips, rated for
'grounding to the enclosure` are an easy
retrofit.
Do be SURE the power is off.
Do study up on 'how tos`.
