It's always put on an outhouse and whenever I see one, that's what I think of. Just wondering what the source is.

"The outhouse, as we know it, originated in Europe more than 500 years ago, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The finer inns began offering "his" and "hers" outhouses. But, because most people were illiterate, symbols were used on the outhouses to show which was "his" and which was "hers". Pictures of the sun and moon were the obvious choice. From ancient times, the "sun" had been a symbol of all that was masculine and the "moon" of all that was feminine.

As time went by, innkeepers reasoned that maintaining a men's outhouse was unnecessary, because they could always go out in the woods--- and those who couldn't or wouldn't, could use the women's outhouse. Men's outhouses disappeared, leaving only women's outhouses, marked with the crescent moon. "

Originally, the sun was meant for men's doors and the moon for women's. But the women's outhouses were so clean, that the men started using them. They decided to merge them into unisex bathrooms and they kept the creasant moon on the outside.

If you ever looked at someones bare butt in the moonlight, you'd already KNOW the answer to this question. It's a reference to the days when people dug holes & squatted over it. Before the first outhouse was ever built! I guess it's an "ode" to the old way of the color of the moon!

i guess maybe, because the out house is out there under the great open skies, therefore its under the stars and moon, and who ever invented it maybe the crescent moon was out that night and they put that symbol on the outhouse! Oh well thats my version of it. who knows? HA!HA!

Because any other moon phase would either look like a circle or a shapeless puzzle, and nights were the worst time to need one.

Because a full moon would make too big a window and someone would see you. Also full moon has other meanings which we wont go into right now.

Just to let you know the general location where you'll find a full moon.

I would think the crescent moon symbol would let in some light when the outhouse was in use during the evening.
