The most important part of the Automobile is the driver. The second part is the whole car. Think of a car like a System, like the human body. All parts are need it and able to work together to get the job done.

Another definition for a Transmission is a Gearbox. Transmissions transfer the kinetic energy from the engine to the rear wheels.

The transmission has different gear ratios built in whether it's an automatic or standard. I'm sure you've heard of low gear. The engine crankshaft is turning for instance a 3.34:1 ratio compared the the drive shaft. In other words The crankshaft inside the motor is turning around in a perpendicular circle 3.34 times for every one turn of the driveshaft. Second gear may be 2.25 revolutions of the crankshaft for every one turn of the drive shaft. Third gear could be 1.65 revolutions of the crankshaft to every complete turn of the driveshaft. Fourth gear may be a one to one ratio. For every turn of the motors crankshaft the driveshaft turns one turn also.
If your car has an overdrive gear The crankshaft turns one complete turn but the driveshaft is turning slightly faster, 1.03 -1.05 turns faster then the crankshaft. Reason is to slow down the motor rpm ( revolutions per minute) to save gasoline.

The object of a transmission is a mechanical or mechanical over hydraulic mechanism thet starts a car from a dead stop and steadily increases the speed of the car without over reving the motor. As the speed of the car increases the transmission up-shifts from low gear to second gear (the next higher gear). This process continues until the speed levels out exactly where the operator wants it. The trans. also has a one speed reverse gear also.
