I want to get a nice laptop for under $1000, ill be using it mainly for programming (websites and software) web browsing and basic note taking for school any suggestions

I agree with the previous poster... some suggestions on location to buy:
www.salescircular.com will show you all the deals in your local stores. I would get a Sony or an HP. I have had great exposure to them in real working environments. Good durability, and you shouldn't spend anywhere close to $1k on a laptop. Just look for something with 100+ GB hard drive, at least 1GB RAM, and at least a 15" screen. Other than that you'll be just fine.

Hi. You particular needs at this time may be met with an even less expensive machine. Gaming is the real challenge.
