All the towns near my house do so I was wondering if they were national....

Although quite common, no not every town. It is more common in flat areas and prairies. And smaller towns.

It is a natural way to make sure your water has pressure - gravity feed. You pump the water up to the tower, where it can sit and it now uses gravity until used. SO, the pump doesn't have to run 24/7.

But if you are a town in a valley and your water comes from the mountains you don't need a tower. And if you live in a city with more high-rises, you have to worry about getting water up to the higher floors.

No. In my area, there are a lot of small towns, and a couple of them share one water tower simply because there are not a whole lot of people around.

no....so.cal. has lakes and reservoirs. some towns out here have tanks
