Well, he was a genius but if you want to know what he was most famous for, it was the formula E=MC squared

E is energy, M is mass and C is the speed of light.

In 1921 he was awarded the Nobel Physics Prize "for his services to Theoretical Physics, and the discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect." The award refers to the paper on the photoelectric effect: "On a Heuristic Viewpoint Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light", that was published in 1905.

Einstein's General Theory of Relativity is also a common association with this famous physicist.

He got famous for changing the way people thought of the Universe. Basically, before him everyone thought about it based on what Newton did with gravity, as just three dimensions. But Newton did not explain how gravity worked, all he did was find a mathematical equation that described it. He also said that space itself was immovable, never affected by anything. Then Einstein came along and said that the Universe was really four dimensions, three of space and one of time. Furthermore, he claimed that these four dimensions formed a "fabric of space-time," and in so doing explained how gravity worked: it was the bending or warping of space-time by mass and energy. Space was no immovable, as Newton had thought, but could be changed by mass and energy.

Also, he overthrew the Newtonian concept of time, which declared that time flowed equally at all times, regardless of what is physically happening. Einstein's relativity claimed (correctly) that time is relative, and that it is possible for two distinct observers to measure time for a single event differently. And don't forget his mass-energy equivalence equation: E = mc^2.

He made all these claims in around 1905. It wasn't until General Relativity (mass warps space) was proven in 1909 that he became world famous and known to even the common man or woman on the street.

The first thing he did to get famous was publish his paper on the photo-electric effect. Even if this had been his only accomplishment, he would still be referenced in textbooks.

But his landmark contributions were the General Theory and the Special Theory of Relativity. He was also a fine violinist. (They say, on Halloween, he would play the violin for the trick-or-treaters, rather than give them candy.)

Masil, I don't think he was "horrible" in college. He thrived in that environment. It was grade school where he had problems, and most of them were due to the suffocating academic atmosphere and the dogmatic authority of the Catholic school where his parents sent him, believing the structure and discipline would be good for him. The significant anti-semitism surrounding him in his youth probably didn't help his attitude any, either.

Theory of Relativity -

E=mc²

where

E = the energy equivalent to the mass (in joules)
m = mass (in kilograms)
c = the speed of light in a vacuum (celeritas) (in meters per second)

Hi. He got famous by predicting things that were later proved.
