The mass of the object and the radius of the object.

The more mass the greater the gravity.
The smaller the radius, the closer you are to the centre of gravity and the greater the surface gravity.

For example, if the Earth was half the radius it is today but still the same mass, the surface gravity would be 4 times as great as it is today.

Or if the Earth was twice the mass but still the same radius, the surface gravity would be 4 times what it is today.

Both mass and radius determine it. For instance Earth's surface gravity is about the same as that at the cloud tops of Neptune, even though Neptune is much more massive. But being a larger planet, you're further from the centre than on Earth's surface.

Well, If I recall my physics class, the surface gravity is caused by a planets/satellites rotation not to mention that smaller objects are attracted to larger objects with more mass.
