Just as long as you aren't passing it off as new or misrepresenting them as antiques when they're not, there is nothing illegal.

My husband doesn't like stopping at garage sales as much as he does going to the Goodwill or some Salvation Army shops. He goes once a week to check out new inventory at the Goodwill. It seems he can't just go in and look, he has to bring something home as well LOL. Now he looks for new, wrapped in celophane, VCR tapes of old movies he's enjoyed but wants to see again. He's really increased his collection since video stores have cleared them out and the Goodwill sells them from a dollar to two dollars. You never know what you'll find in resale shops. It's a hunt for buried treasure in a sense. Finding a bargain is the ultimate goal. Especially on something you can really use. Quite often my husband, who's pretty lucky at finding things of quality, will bring home a camera and he will sell it to a camera shop owner he knows. So he can pick up a few extra dollars that way. Often things are mis marked, so he will scoop up bargains like that every time he can. Too many people seem to shop at the thrift stores now. So that when we do run across a bargain, we feel lucky that no one else discovered it before we did. There are regular shoppers now. And people are well dressed who shop and talk on their cell phones while scanning the racks. I heard a guy answer his cell, as if he was at work. How he slipped out I don't know, but he made out that he had to check on something and get back to whoever he was talking with. I heard a similar conversation from a well dressed woman once while she was really going through a rack of blouses. She was giving work orders to someone on the phone. And told them she'd be back in the office at a certain time, lying to them about where she was, of course. I guess the thrift stores are a great place to be, even on a work day LOL.

If you buy the furniture it is yours to do what you want with. You may want to check with your tax man about legalities regarding how much income you are receiving from the sale of the furniture. He would be the one to talk to. Just remember to have the buyer sign something that lists the piece as is so no one can come back and claim that you sold a used/repaired piece of furniture as new.

Why on earth would it be illegal? You bought the item. You own the item. You can do whatever you want with the item.

I suppose legality might enter into it if you consider it a home-based business. But you sound more like a hobbyist. You won't have tons of traffic coming to your door.

In my opinion, there is nothing illegal about it.

If you mean "take away unknowingly" from the donation spot I would say that it is definitely unethical, I dont know about the legality however it was on the Thrift Store property at the time of taking. If find means "purchase from" the restore it and then sell it then it is not illegal.

If you purchase an item, and fix it, it's not illegal to then resell it. You own it and can legally sell it. Now if you are selling furniture that belongs to the thrift shop on craigslist, then it's theft.

hellz no ..people do that all the time. Well, not furniture. We have to eat too ya know. It's not like youre illegally distributing licensed goods. Just think of it this way. If this was illegal, ebay would be out of business. done deal.

I don't see why it would be. People do things like this all the time..its called Ebay! LOL. I'm thinking that your neighbor just doesn't want to hear you making noise (sawing, hammering..etc) and is just being a putts about it. You just can't list the items on Craigslist as "New"..but you CAN list them as "Restored" or "Refurbished." I hope this helps!

It is not illegal. If you purchase the item from the thrift shop, it is yours and you have the right to fix it and resell it.

However, any money you make from these sales does need to be reported on your tax return as earned income.

NO WAY! IT ISN'T ILLEAGAL!

I purchase clothing from thrift stores, turn them into anime costumes, and make money from that.

I don't know where I'd be without a little extra income!

Keep at it!
