Brilliant writer, sad life.

He was orphaned at a young age (his father walked out on them, his mother died not long after of consumption). He had a hard time finding his place in life and held a lot of odd jobs. He didn't do well in school and was court-martialled out of the military, and he was often in debt. He had a sad love life (at one point a sweetheart of his married another), was hooked on alcohol (though he had been on the wagon for months before he died) and opium, never really made money and died at age 40 (most likely of rabies though people at the time assumed it was alcohol and drugs).

His writings, though excellent, show a disturbed mind by virtue of the macabre nature of them. His stories are frightening and gruesome and interesting, but that type of imagination has to be difficult to live with.

Poe was a literary genius. His poetry and short stories are amazing, but at the same time they're tragic or at times horrific -- but I think that contributes to their excellence. His life story was horribly tragic -- orphaned young, estranged from his adoptive parents, alcohol abuse, financial troubles, the early death of his wife from TB, and then his mysterious death. He's a fascinating person to study and was a brilliant writer as well. My personal favorite of his works is "Annabel Lee" -- so sad, but so sweet.

He was a great writer that led a tortured life. Without him, where would Stephen King, R.L. Stine, M. Night Shamalyn be? He created a genre.

He was "messed up in the head" (most brilliant people seem to be) and yes his stories are interesting.

Excellent writer, tortured soul. Funny how that seems to happen a lot.

I definitely agree! I love his writings, but I think it's very unfortunate that someone as amazing as him should have been so (mentally) tortured.
