Finally - someone who doesn't want their kids to be brats! Thank you, THANK YOU! I'll bet anything that your kids won't end up like these spoiled little snots on here asking what they should "get" for Christmas, and making demands for presents.
That said, I think the amount is up to you and what you can afford. By all means, get them what you want. But you know what one of the most valuable presents is? To teach them to put others before themselves. For example, my three - year - old is currently sorting through the clothes and toys he doesn't want anymore. We're going to sell them on Ebay and use the money to buy toys for children who would otherwise not have a Christmas. My son does believe in Santa, but I explained to him that Santa can't bring everything; the mommies and daddies help out, but some kids don't have mommies and daddies. So, because we are so blessed, we are responsible for helping those who don't have as much as we do. He really understood, and said he felt sad that some kids don't have mommies and daddies or houses to live in. He so wanted to help them - even offered to sell his bed! Heheh. We're also helping his preschool class put on a celebration for residents of a nursing home who would otherwise be alone for the holidays. Last year, I requested that if anyone wanted to get me a present, they instead donate to charity to give someone else a nice holiday. We also "adopted" a little boy my son's age for Christmas, and bought all of his presents. I can honestly say that was the greatest gift I have ever received - knowing that a little boy who would have otherwise been very sad and disappointed when he awoke on Christmas morning got to enjoy the same magic and wonder that every child deserves.
You sound like you truly care about instilling good values in your children - great job! Merry Christmas and God bless you all.

That is something you will have to think about. I would say that as long as you can afford to give them great christmases without having to take out a loan to pay for them then do it. As long as your other billd can get paid too. If you do spend a large amount on each child (say more than $300) try to balance it out by having them give to a charity, like toys for tots, When you take them shopping have them pick out a toy and place it in the barrel let them know that their are kids out there who wont be getting a christmas if it were not for giving people like themselves. Or you could buy or make a bunch of stocking and fill them up with personal hygiene products to take to homeless or battered women's shelters. Let your kids know that they are special and lucky to be able to get such wonderful things on Christmas. It will balance out the extravagence they will get by teaching them to give. It will also brighten some very needy people's day as well as making your children feel they are doing their part to bring christmas to someone else. Thank you for asking this question, I hope that I have helped you out. Merry Christmas!

Anything over $500 per child is too much. I'm sure they don't go without the rest of the year. All the little, "Mommy, can I get this?" stuff adds up.

I know a family that gives their children only 3 gifts for Christmas, saying, "If three gifts were enough for Jesus, they are enough for you." Definitely puts things in perspective, although that is a little harsh! In the end, you're the only one who knows your budget. If you have to whip out the credit cards and figure out how to pay them before next Christmas, you're spending too much! :)

I don't agree w/ Robin Christmas isn't all about gifts and I think that's what people forget. Spend as much as you think is resonable. Like no more then $1000-1025.
btw I'm a child/almost teen

Spend as much as you can afford. It's Christmas, it's not like it happens every day. You're SUPPOSED to spoil your kids on Christmas. It won't make them brats.
