so many families are a mess without it? I'm not out to "get" familes, heck, I come from one and last time I looked I'm still in one. How can they profess to love America but have a problem with some law abiding, contributing Americans yet want to represent us all? To me it seems convoluted.

Any thoughts?

Politicians are looking for votes, not friends. I live in Massachusetts, and in the two plus years that gay marriage has been legal, the sky hasn't fallen, the sun still rises in the morning and the earth hasn't opened up and swallowed all the "sinners". It is very hypocritical that they say gay marriage undermines family values, since most child abuse cases, pedophilia cases and spousal abuse cases occur within straight headed households. Then the church has the nerve to condemn gays and gay marriage while their priests are abusing children, mostly MALE children. Pedophilia AND homosexuality !! Personally, I think the term "marriage" should just be abolished and all people, gay OR straight enter a legal union without the church or the politicians sticking their noses in. The whole big stink is over the term "marriage". Almost all of the candidates support "civil unions" but not "gay marriage", but what is marriage ? A civil union. Just do away with the damn word "marriage" and the whole mess could be cleared up once and for all. If a church won't sanction the "legal union" between two people, screw it - go to a justice of the peace - or take away the church's right to "unite" people all together. It always amuses me that the church invokes "separation of church and state" when it suits THEIR agenda. Make the church start paying income and property taxes and see how fast they scream. It always seems like it's their way or no way. Again, with the politicians, they just want to get elected and want to make as many people happy as they can - once they're in office, they're gonna break most of their promises anyway. History has proven this many times over. They're like used car salesmen, they just have more money and better taste in clothing.

Notice a presidential candidates will promise you the moon and stars but get in the white house and nothing gets accomplished expect this damn war. they say whatever they think voters wanna hear most voters are in denial of same sex marriage because they say it's in moral but if you look at those that say that are mostly baby boomers who are trying to hold on to outdated ways. Now here is the problem certain age groups rule when it comes to voting certain groups always vote so these so call candidates run to their beliefs to get them to vote for them. We as younger voters don't see the importance of voting and we loose out in the long run . Well that's just my opinion.

There is an old joke about the Conservative party in the UK. It's said that you can tell they are really in favour of the family, since most of them have two or three.

It's the old tactic of divide and conquer. Align yourself "with" one part of the population by identifying another part as a threat. Us pesky homos are out to destroy the family, in case you didn't know (although since most marriages now end in divorce, the straights seem to be doing a pretty good job all by themselves without any help from us).
It's cliche, bandwagonnery and an insult to anyone with a brain. When talking about gay people most of them start off with "I have nothing against gay people, but..." - you can safely ignore everything preceding that "but".

I agree totally. It's soooo hypocritical and what I wonder is if the candidates think WE are stupid enough to believe the junk they try to tell us.
