The other day Isis asked if there were any first albums that were the best examples of a band's work. Now I'm asking are there any last albums by a band that you think is their best work? The album they did right before they broke up. Any examples? I currently can't think of one.

I hope I'm wording this correctly....

rukrym: I think final might be too hard, lol. I don't know...

Let it Be was the last one released but Abbey Road was the last one recorded.

Joy Division - Closer

This was only the band's second full length album but unfortunately their last due to Ian Curtis' death. This album is one of the most emotional filled albums I've ever encountered.

I will think of more. In the meantime I have a kitchen to paint and leaves to rake. Owning a house truly is a pain in the ***.

Edit: Another band who waited for their last album to release a classic is Big Black with Songs About F**king. This was their masterpiece before Albini went to form Rapeman and Shellac.

I can't believe no one has mentioned "LA Woman" by The Doors yet. It is the best album they ever released and sounds just so raw and full of blues and whiskey.

Brilliant final record of one of the most important Rock bands. The last notes of "Riders On The Storm" are so final as if subconsciously the band knew it would be their last.

For all you Doors fanatics - "Other Voices" and "Full Circle" don't count as Jim Morrison was in Pere Lachaise by that point!

Black Sabbath-Never Say Die
The final album form the original Sabbath Line Up
And what a phenomenal way to go out...WOW!
Led Zeppelin-In Through The Out Door
Awesome yet sad. It showed glimpses of the amazing directions that Zeppelin may have taken in the 80's if not for Bonzo's death.
(Can You imagine "Big Log" as a Zeppelin song?)
Pink Floyd-The Final Cut
Floyd's final album with Roger Waters. It gets dissed by a lot of people but I think it's haunting and beautiful, especially the song
"Two Suns In The Sunset"
Which is one of My favorite Floyd tracks ever
And the song
"Not Now John"
Which is about as close to Metal as Floyd ever got.
Those are the best examples I can think of Sarah.

Bauhaus' "Burning From the Inside" ... its my favorite by them

"Let It Be" was apparently recorded before "Abbey Road" and released after(?), which would mean "Abbey Road" was the last they worked on

Edit: What if a band only had one ablum?

Edit: Who's the fool giving everyone a thumbs down

Abbey Road by The Beatles. The greatest swan song of all time.

To rukrym: Let It Be was recorded before Abbey Road just released later.

Abbey Road is the only one I can think of.

Most of the bands I like are still around.

I would have to say:
Electric Ladyland by the Jimi Hendrix Experience (last and best album by the band and also Jimi's last studio album before he died).

Hmmm... I'm kind of stumped too, although I think one could argue the case for "Trompe le Monde" being the best Pixies album. Personally, I'm more of a Surfer Rosa kind of person.

I'll have to think about this one...

Edit:
When you say last, do you mean final or most recent? Cause if current bands count I might be able to come up with one or two more.

**Wasn't "Let It Be" the Beatles last album?
