To answer existential questions, help with personal problems, help believe in something greater than themselves.

Some people believe in a god of some sort out of fear, ignorance, or superstition. In fact, it can be fairly stated that religious thinking and behaviour has always been basic to human beings.

I'm not sure that the passage of time has changed this much: today's religious are perhaps a bit more sophisticated, but it boils down to the same thing. Ironically, some of the most religious people I have encountered labelled themselves as "Atheists."

On the other hand, there have always been people for whom religious practise and belief are NOT derrived from fear, ignorance and superstition. Their conclusions are the result of conscious thought and logic, and their outward expressions, though they may look identical to other religious, are secondary to their personal faith.

One of the best examples I can point to would be the experience of C. S. Lewis--a most unwilling convert to Christianity. In fact, the first section in his book "Mere Christianity" entitled 'Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universe' has affected thousands--perhaps millions--of readers. It is brutally honest, and rigourously logical.

Is there a single answer as to why people believe in God? I doubt it, but many who take this question seriously will have some interesting and perhaps surprising answers!

I believe in God because basically of Jesus his son. There is historical prove that he did exist and died on the cross. Too many things in the Bible have happened. For instance: did you know that when Moses went up on that mountain that the burning bush he saw only grows on that mountain and no where else in the world. It secretes an oil that burns and does not burn the tree. Did you know that Hitler is mentioned in the bible and so is NASA and it says that man will go to the moon.
Most of all because of Jesus because he died so I may be saved from sin. He gave himself freely for all of us and he sure did not have to do it! Can I ignore this? No! If I ignore his self sacrifice then I will not be saved and I sort of like the idea of living forever.

A long time ago someone passed this on like it was some kind of tradition, like Xmas. People need to believe that with alot of evil in this world there is hope. God comes in many forms and in many names...We also have good angels and bad ones. God is the eternal hope for salvation as they say.God is good hope.

You can bless yourself.

You get quick easy answers.

You can stop worrying about dying one day.

You can feel safe from bad people.

You can belong to a big social club.

You do not have to solve the hard problems if god will save you.

You make your mom proud of you.

People will trust you not to bring up difficult questions in front of the kids.

You can sing in the choir.

You can leave all your thinking to the priests.

It allows them to justify the inability of our species to get alone with and within the nature of existence on our own, in harmony with that which oversees the overall value of our own existence throughout the entire scheme of things.

We, for the most's part, are not of any value.

So we conjure up and blame god and say that it is all in his hands, when it truely is upon ours.

It also allows us to personally let ourselves off the hook for the conditions we collectively render without care or concern on this planet, this cell floating in space.

The problem is not whether you do or don't believe in any god but rather whether any overseeing agent or agency would approve of our mess and I don't care what religion you are.

Because our very soul and spirit screams at us to look! Look and use your God given brain to see with the eye's God gave you.
That or just curl up in a foetal position, wither up and die.
