I agree I think it's more like 60 % of the population is Gay.

I agree with Edgar...we live in a society that teaches people to be heterosexual, and this skews the results. Who can say how much? I think that bisexuality in particular is much more common than the numbers would suggest.

Unfortunately, not even close to one out of every ten people I know is lgbt to my knowledge. At my high school, there were 14 lesbian/bisexual girls that I knew of and only 1 openly gay male in my entire school for the four years I attended. This is out of about 1750 kids total. Now I realize that I did not know the majority of these 1750 people personally, and so I can't assume that there were no others. If there were, why didn't they come to GSA????

Speaking of my GSA, it fell apart due to lack of interest. How sad.

Since so many gay and bisexual people choose to remain in the closet, it is nearly impossible to determine the percentage of LGBT people in our society. I don't remember getting a form in the mail inquiring about my sexuality, and I've never seen it on a census taker's form. You really have to wonder where they come up with these "scientific" determinations. It's like the "four out of five doctors recommend......" thing. Do they really ask every doctor in the world their opinion ? Polls and such are completely useless unless every single person in the world is asked, and more importantly, they answer honestly. Then you'd get a REAL answer as to the percentage of LGBT citizens that inhabit the world. I'll bet it's a LOT more than 10% !

If I recall correctly, the 10% figure came from the Kinsey study.

It wasn't backed up by any empirical evidence but since Kinsey's study was considered the landmark study on human sexuality, it just eventually became the accepted figure for the estimated proportion of the LGBT population.

But it's equally invalid to form an opinion just based on your own perception. For example, you may live in an extremely gay-tolerant area, and that would skew your perception.

In general, the smaller the sample size, the less valid the conclusions drawn therefrom.

Well the LGBT community knows that's not an accurate number, but I suppose it helps the straight community deal with the fact that we are out there by putting out stupid statistics such as these. They figure the less the better, so they probably did the survey in a small town in mississippi.

The 10% isn't accurate (and there probably will never be an accurate figure) because it doesn't include the people who aren't out and aren't willing to admit they're gay even on an anonymous survey. The number is actually higher.

10% is an estimate of the GLBT population. Since not every GLBT will identify themselves in census (having good reason in most cases), there can't be an accurate figure.

That 10% does not include bisexuals. It's more applicable to those who are exclusively gay.

look if the truth be know ..bisexuals make up at least 40% of the population ...gays/lesbians 20% and the rest are stra8's ...how do I come up with those figures ...over 40years of being bisexual and being sexually active

i think that rate is just about correct because, and i mean no offense, all creatures (including humans) were programed to populate. That means that maybe 10-15% of people are GLBT, but about only 10% are "Out"
