I used to work at a childrens science museum and taught classes ...

I would try themes, and do the same theme for both age groups, but age appropriate:
Pirate theme - 3D treasure maps using all sorts of random craft stuff, making their own treasure chest out of a shoebox, pirate hats, etc.
Slumber party - Beauty: make their own soaps, sand candles, sleeping masks with feathers, etc.
Animals - learn and create - teach the children about a Lemur or some random animal they've never seen and have them make their own masks.

Oh this is a really really good one if you can do it in the summer, or find a heated pool: This needs to be a full day project, for both girls and boys (and you will need a TON of duct tape, a ton of it):
Float Your Own Boat - give the kids as much cardboard, string, duct tape, regular tape and other tools and have them make the biggest baddest boat they can -to be tested in a time trial at the end of the day.

Do a search online, there is a wealth of information out there... also look at the classes that your local museums (science and art), local groups, etc. are doing and draw some ideas from them. Many of them have summer classes and have lots of ideas.

There are so many sites on the web with wonderful crafts for kids. Here's a good one that has the crafts divided by the kids age.

take a coffe filter and have the kids color it with marker, then spritz, and i mean spritz lightly with water and it should run, then have them cut out or you cut out a turkey body and feet and the filter is his tail with pretty colors, the turkey will need a face and legs too.
crayola has model magic i think that is what it is and they could make an ornament or something for their parents, depending on the size of the item it needs to dry at least 24 hours before doing anything else to it. they can then paint it or decorate however. good luck

Is a great website for lots of different projects for all different age groups of kids. Everything from simple paper crafts for little ones to beading and sewing projects for older kids.

They also have kits and other things you can buy there but the patterns are free!

Yes -- Lion Brand has a whole newsletter of kids projects (my daughter edits it) called 'BK4K -- By Kids, 4 Kids' and they have a ton of projects for all ages. You can use their archive and find a lot of fun and easy projects that use yarn.

Quilling...a paper craft...even the little ones can roll the paper and it is good practice glueing...and teaches the first rule of Quilling..."Less is More.
