The saying means basically this: When you bake a cake (or have one made at a bakery), it usually looks very pretty (especially if it's a bakery cake), and you have a tendency to ogle over how pretty it is, and the saying means that if you're ever gonna find out what the cake tastes like (which is the whole purpose of having the cake made in the first place), then you must first destroy it's prettiness.

Well as you probably know the meaning of the saying is that, you want to much out of life or a situation, or in other words that you're being selfish. Cake is usually a desert that's given out during a celebration like a birthday or wedding, eating a WHOLE cake would probably be perceived as being selfish. So maybe "You can't have your cake and eat it too" would be as if someone wanted to eat his/her birthday cake alone. :P

In case you're serious: Actually the original saying is reversed: You can't eat your cake and have it, too.
It's desiring to much than you can handle or desiring incompatible things at the same time.
If not, I agree with you. If you have a cake, EAT IT. You can't eat idiomatic expressions anyway.

It's not a dumb saying. What it means is that you can't have the cake, as in keep it/own it, AND eat it. Think of it as "You can't eat your cake and still own it afterwards".

I know lol that's such a dumb saying. Like how when you find something "it's always the last place you look" - but why would you keep looking if you've found it? OBVIOUSLY it's gonna be the last place you look lol.
