I think both are lovely names, but I prefer Melana because Melania brings to mind a whole slew of unflattering words if you give it any thought (and kids will give it plenty of thought) like Mania, manic, etc.

Pretty close to "Melanoma" which is a type of deadly skin cancer. They are a malignancy that arises out of the dark brown/black skin moles. Melanocytes are the pigmented cells of the skin that give persons their skin coloring (race).

I like the sound of the name...but worry about the association with melanoma as a negative.

Also, "melena" is the medical term for a wine-colored liquid stool.
