Why does the photosphere appear to have a sharp edge when the sun has no solid surface?

Hi. The massive gravity pulls everything as close as it can. If you have seen close ups of the surface you will notice prominences that protrude quite a way up. Not quite as shape as you may think. http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/
