I work at this amazing independent bookstore. I've been here for 14 months and I absolutely love my job. They know I'm gay, have no problem with that at all and we are all like family. The only drawback is that I don't make enough money to pay my bills. I just got a small raise but it still isn't enough. There is also almost no room for any kind of growth here. After years of applying, I've finally been offered a job at the university in town. My pay is going up dramatically, I can go back to school for free, the benefits are amazing, I'll get 2 weeks paid vacation at Christmas...it goes on and on. I'm just struggling with the fact that I have to tell my boss tomorrow (whom I ADORE) that I'm leaving in two weeks. Christmas is our busiest time and my job is very specialized. I feel like a traitor even though I know this is a great opportunity for me to improve my and my family's life. Any advice?

let your current employer know that you have enjoyed working for them and you enjoy the people you work with, however, you have oppotunities somewhere else that will pay more and possibly offer better advancement oppotunities. put in a two weeks notice. make sure you are and extra great employee that last two weeks, and on your last day, bring cupcakes or cookies or something as a parting ,peace offering kind of thing so there are no ahrd feeling and you leave on very good and memorable terms

Hello Stacey P.,

Congratulations on your new job.

By the way, go ahead and give your Boss a polite, formal letter of resignation stating that you're resigning in two weeks.

Please, be happy about your success and hard work. This will be an excellent opportunity for you to improve you and your family's life.

And if your current Boss gets really angry about this, then it means that the Boss is not being appreciative of your hard work and success.

--Congratulations and Cheers,
Mauricio

Perhaps you could help out on the weekends until the holiday season is over and then quit.

A business man UNDERSTANDS business.
Dont feel bad about having to tell him that you are advancing.. he should be as happy and proud FOR you as you are.

He will understand if you explain it to him like you explained it to us. You have to take this opportunity.
