If possible, I'd like to know exactly HOW one so massive would occur, under what conditions, and where it's most likely to appen.

An F5 tornado is one that has winds so strong that complete destruction of anything it hits occurs. They are very rare. There were probably more F5 tornadoes in Twister than there have been in the last fifty years or more in the USA. The science in Twister was not particularly good and a lot of rubbish was presented. The flying cow was good, though.

All the tornadoes in Twister are from pictures of actual tornadoes. An EF-5 tornado has not hit the US since the Moore, OK tornado on May 3, 1999. The most likely times for tornadoes is the end or March through early June. This is the most likely time for a strong tornado to happen, although the latest EF-5 tornado was August 28, 1990. Some of the scenes in twister are fake, you cannot live through an EF-5 tornado they should have been it by debris even before the tornado destroyed the barn. And if you noticed the "hail" was actually ice chips. Some science aspects were right, some were not.

I am NOT a meteorologist...but I do ENJOY analyzing weather & weather patterns & changes !!

As far as I know, F5 tornados usually occur in the midwest... Something to do with the HOT moisture from the gulf of Mexico...and the Rocky mountains forcing a cold front to drop down in a spiral under the moist warm front in the midwest, causing a spiraling convection etc. !

In fact, many planes landing in Colorado encounter air pockets, which will cause them to lose altitude while flying...! While watching a documentary, it shows that a convection occurs in the air at a certain altitude...and when a plane hits it, VOILA loses altitude or could BE forced UP higher to depending on the variables...

Think of waves in an ocean, coming to hit the beach...!?! When a BIG wave comes in ....it splashes inland...and then is sucked back in the ocean, in the underneath current, which I believe is the under-toe (sp?)...which can cause a person not to be able to swim correctly and bring them out to sea, especially along long levies....Levies being like the "Rocky Mountains" with a COLD front !! Wind comes down the mountain (since COLD air sinks and WARM air rises..) especially MOIST warm air !

I am sure the meteorologist student on this site could explain better !! LOL

I liked the movie, btw, Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt,.... VERY dramatic !

I'm assuming that you never heard about this lake in this small town. This flock of ducks landed in this lake, there was an early freeze that year, the ducks were frozen in the lake, they all flapped their wings and flew off with the lake, rumor is, now it's somwhere in Minnesota. Who'd a thunk!!?
