The monitor screen is called the monitor screen. For XP, Me, DOS, Linux, etc.

The image put on the screen in Windows, Mac OSes and Linux is call the desktop.

Ask the guys at Parc Xerox why.

I don't remember any reference to the screen, but that can't be worked on anyway, other than a good cleaning with Windex now and then.
Why would they even mention it to begin with?
