This has happened to me before. You never really knew the "real" him. He was just showing off his good side. The real him is ugly and that is what you saw. I think of it this way, it is good to know the real him than to know the fake so you won't waste your time anymore.

Yes you never really new this person from the start, it has to be in there nature to begin with but maybe very well hinden....
Stress can bring it out in the open but it has to be there from the start
