Normally a locked room, with conditioned power, and temperature. It will have the core networking equipment for a site (router and core switches) and most of the servers in use. the servers are usually mounted on racks or special cabintes.

Hope this helps!

for all big companies, all the data is stored on a network, and all the computers are connected to the network. So it normally has the whole companies ram and hardrive space, at least all the data is backed up every so often. There is also the data required for the live video streaming and recording of the security tapes. There is also the backup batteries for the whole system, in case of a fire or power outage. The server room is also where all the internet lines go in and out of. So if you have a 500 person company then you got 500 ethernet cables going out of that room, i have personally been in a server room and it is pretty amazing and complex

Put simply, a room for the server and most with networking equipment, we have clients running 1 server to some running 10 to 20, but all called server room, sure the ones with better budget will be able to afford proper ventilation, some even has aircon, but in the end, a server room is just that.

The largest server room our organization has houses about 40 various servers. Domain controllers, print servers, file servers, phone servers, etc. We also have the majority of our network infrastructure devices located within; switches, routers, firewalls, IDSes, etc. It also houses all of the telephone interconnect cabling, a couple of large UPS devices and a pair of air conditioners.

It's a really noisy room.

You may also hear the term "MDF" or "IDF" used instead of "server room/closet". MDF stands for Main Data Frame and IDF stands for Intermediate Data Frame. Their use originates from the telco companies.

Usually it is a room that is temperature controlled. From there they have all the servers, wire closets and backup power located there.
Higher security is also used in rooms like this.

Noise!

no really, kind of what you would expect, Routers, wires, servers (big computers that handle various tasks for a network), UPS, firewalls, modems, etc.
