Do you have a "service light/check engine light" on presently?

If you do, that means that whatever is wrong with the vehicle is pronounced enough to trigger and store a fault code.
To pull the code, the vehicle must be hooked up to and IDS machine (diagnostic machine). Within an hour, the IDS can determine what code (be it fuel, a perfomance code), that is stored.

(OTHERWISE, SOME TIPS).....

Based from the symtoms you've listed, I would venture to suggest, having your IAC inspected. That is your Idle Air Control Valve. This part tells the vehicle when/how to idle.
Depending on the type of vehicle it doesn't take more than 30mins. to install and the part runs from $50.00 to as high as $200.00. I've seen it occur on both ends of the spectrum.

Could be an oxygen sensor. There are more than one on most vehicle. Plugs and wires should be changed at about 60,000 miles. Most platinum/irridium tipped plugs can give you about 100k miles.

Change your fuel/air filter, and you might definitely want to consider having a "Fuel Induction Service" Performed. Clean out all of the deposits left from all the different grades of fuel. Those deposits clog your injectors with sludge. Fuel Induction service will clean those, get you better gas mileage and cause your injectors to spray evenly as opposed to spurting.

Upgrade your fuel to a higher quality, like premium, inspite of the cost, it will literally pay it back to you.

Best Wishes....

depending on what year (or generation) you may have something as simple as an idle issue. if idle is too low, under a load, the engine will sputter and die.
i will assume one thing at this point, the vehicle is an automatic correct? next time you are out driving or at a stop sign with the transmission in gear, put it in neutral and see if the engine recovers. i do agree with some of the others that responded, you may need a simple tune-up, and as part of a tune-up, you check timing and idle rpm.

it could be a gas or an air filter stopping up on it ,possible too it may need a new set of plugs in it they will run like that when they get some miles on them, anything tune up related will cause this to happen, just start checking things and ruling them out until you find it,you can also get a free computer scan done it it at auto zone that may help you in finding out whats causing it to run like that also, good luck on it

It could be old spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, pcv valve or it could be a combanation. I would recomend getting a tune up. A tune up will adress a couple of other things also that would probly help in this matter.

You can buy an air filter really cheaply, I did this it cost me under £10, or just clean the one you've got, take off the clips and take the air filter out , clean out any debris or leaves and replace it. Your care should be better after that. Or it could be the alternator (thats wat i was told at my garage when i had the same prob).

Do you have a carburettor motor and aircon? if so, you have have been given a thingy related to the area of the carb, that's meant seize up on the greater beneficial load on the engine while the aircon kicks in. undesirable concept. in wonderful condition a carb from a non-aircon style and bump up the idle velocity. greater beneficial nonetheless, junk the aircon.

Air filter... fuel filter... fuel pump... bad injector... bad sensor...

Have it hooked up to a code reader. It'll tell you where the problem is.
