Unless you're looking to use an actual African name, I don't think ethnicity should limit your choices here. :)

In other words, I've known plenty of African American women with strong, classic names that have suited them beautifully! Some common, some more unusual -- Angelina, Rowena, Mila, Catherine, Vivian, Norah, Cecily, Fallon, Mary, Zaira, Ivy, Lila, Ruby, Viola, etc.

Biblical names (Naomi, Talitha, Vashti, Dara) and Celtic names are also fairly popular within the African American community (Donovan, Denzel, Sean, Desmond, Ciara, Alannah, Siobhan, etc.), so perhaps something along those lines would appeal. In which case, this site might be useful. :)

I wouldn't, however, limit myself to the stereotypical "black" names (at least according to many others LOL). Those that are obviously created and completely lacking meaning, or simply random prefixes and suffixes added to an already-existing name. Those sort of names are exactly that -- stereotypical. And there's no reason to give your child a name she'll have to work against, rather than one that will work with her. ;)

Hope that helps!

Amina- African Meaning: Peaceful, secure

Origin: Arabic Meaning: Truthful, trustworthy

Pronunciation:

Ameera-
Origin: Arabic Meaning: Prince, ruler; prosperous

Pronounced: (ah MEER ah)

I like Amina the most but both names are very pretty and have a true meaning.
