Not paying child support shows a lack of responsibility, both financial and moral. These attributes will not make him desirable to employers, and it can effect his ability to get a job. Being behind in child support will show up during a background investigation.

I still would not feel sorry for him. It takes a long time to be $20K behind, I can't imagine he has a valid excuse for that much money. I would suggest you do not drop it. You, and your children, deserve that money.

It sounds to me like he is just trying to run away. Good luck to you.

They probably won't let you drop your citizenship if you owe child support. Even if they do let you do it you will still owe more and more forever. And if she wants she can probably hire a Costa Rican lawyer and sue you. Ask your lawyer if there is an extradition treaty as Costa Rica is pretty tight w. the US. Even if there is not one now pretty soon there will be in regard to child support. A special request can be made to have you extradited. If you are charged in the US then American or not you could get detained in a third country. Plus I would look into if the Costa Rican government will make you a citizen if your US passport has been confiscated. Seems like a whole lot of things could go wrong.

It depends. I know there are some states that take away licensing if the parent owes child support. I have never heard of the ARMY doing anything like this. Is he an independent contractor or is he actually in the ARMY? If he continues to protest, tell him to have the potential employer send the documentation that he couldn't get the job because he owes child support.

I could buy his story if he isn't in the ARMY and is just working for them, but even then they are still payed in the US....I guess it just sounds a little fishy to me

If he owes that much child support he may not be able to get a passport due to a warrant for failure to pay. You can't leave the country if you have outstanding warrants. There are jobs in the country. But no, an employer can't not hire you because you owe money. They may choose not to due to a suspected character flaw. Failure to pay your bills can be seen as a character flaw. They may also be concern about the potential of items being removed from inventory to pay personal bills. A prospective employer may choose not hire someone if they are unable to travel if the job requires travel. Even if you drop the request for child support, the warrants don't magically go away.

I know that the military doesn't like the fact that members of the military owe child support. They might have done a background check that's shows that the support is owed ,when you are working for the government I have found they will send you support from the ex's check unless the law has changed. If I was you I wouldn't drop any of what is owed to my child. You are like everyone else you have to support that child and he should have to pay his part as well.

Yeah we all know that a man can make a TON of money to catch up child support while in jail. If he has a job and is trying to pay, chances are he will lose the job when he goes to jail. How does that help?

tell him if he pays then it won't be that much.......my mother is going through something similar except her ex claims it keeps him from being able to buy a house......tell him the money's not for you it's actually for the child and even when the child grows up he'll still have to pay.........

don't let him talk you into taking care of the kid emotionally, physically, and financially all alone.......he needs to contribute some way and since he's planning on going across seas then that way should be financially..........

ahaha noooo.
to GET child support, one has to have a job, therefore, you can't get money if you don't have a job.
Maybe because it's overseas, but i still say don't drop the child support.
He owes it, he should pay it.
