This happened when I tried to install a video card. I normally have a NVIDIA Geforce 6150 which is integrated in the motherboard. Now the computer will get to that Safe mode selection screen but will freeze on any of the options.

My computer is a HP Pavilion a1600n. I was installing a PCI Express video card. I'm using WIndows XP.

Is there a way to recover the information I had on the drive? Thanks!

Disable the built-in video card from Bios before install the new card. Put in WinXP disc and run the chkdsk to fix your hard drive.

If you have a computer that does boot and can burn a CD, I'd suggest burning a copy of Knoppix. You'll then boot the offending computer with Knoppix in the CD drive (make sure your BIOS is set up to boot the CD). Knoppix should automatically mount the Windows drive and you'll have at least the ability to read the drive contents.

There are several other live CDs that will do the same, but Knoppix is pretty notorious for being able to handle this kind of issue. If you do have problems with Knoppix, download and burn Ubuntu 7.10, which does have the latest NTFS module, allowing read and write to a Windows drive.

Good luck

properly... For me...i'd attempt the easy to apply loose open source technique. stay remote from Microsoft products...they were given you interior the jam interior the first position. So the first element to do is load a stay linux cd and observe in case your records are nevertheless there or no longer...it could be that the re-installation trashed the force. i'd recomend domestic dog linux, Knoppix or Ubuntu. domestic dog might want to be the extremely quickly in this situation using the undeniable fact that's so small and all lots into ram. in case your records are there and also you're taking position to have a 2d difficult force...your stay CD help you to replica them over. If no longer you may burn them to a disk...or perhaps better hearth up your position community and replica your records over to share on a unique computing device. Then i'd use a device said as Partition Magic or QTparted to learn out my partition and flow it round if mandatory. Then once you try to load abode windows you may want to do a restore and attempt fixboot or fixMBR. those steps grant you with a good start up.

Try inserting to Windows XP install disc and reboot your PC.

DO NOT install Windows XP..
Choose REPAIR Windows XP. If it is a system file that was corrupted, you may have a chance at letting Windows repair itself.

You can hook-up your hard drive to another PC and extract any important files. ;)
