riight, im writing a personal experience piece for english, about the best/worst day of our lives. mine's about my best friend.
so yah, i thought i should work some lyrics into it, because im well bad at writing and stuff. so anyone know any good (how can a song about that be good..?) songs about suicide, with quotable lyrics. preferably quite modern songs, but not too modern. before 2006ish would be perfect (:
thanks.

Blaine Larsen's How Do You Get That Lonely stands out for me as one of the best songs ever written about suicide.

Everybody Cries (AKA Sometimes): REM
Goodbye Cruel World (from the album The Wall): Pink Floyd
Without You: Badfinger, but made his own by Nilsson
Rock & Roll Suicide: David Bowie (OK, this is about someone trying to help a suicidal person, but fits)
Someone Saved My Lofe Tonight: Elton John (similar to the above).
A Day in the Life: The Beatles
Can't think of any others at present, but probably some good ones out there, besides the disturbing ones which actually encourage people to contemplate suicide.

It's a bit older than you maybe want, but how about "Alone Again, Naturally" by Gilbert O'Sullivan?

In a little while from now
If I’m not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it’s like when you’re shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that’s tough
She's stood him up"
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to well wouldn’t do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much, as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God and His mercy
Or if He really does exist
Why did He desert me in my hour of need
I truly am indeed Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts
broken in the world that can’t be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

Alone again, naturally

Now looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn’t understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

Don't Fear The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult (great track, pity the lyrics are so disturbing even though the writer claims the song isn't about suicide but instead about eternal love).
It's not modern though but is a classic, you can interpret it as a suicide song even though not intended that way by the writer, just check the lyrics.

Don't Fear The Reaper
-------------
All our times have come
Here but now they're gone
Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain
We can be like they are

Come on baby... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby take my hand... Don't fear the Reaper
We'll be able to fly... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby I'm your man...

Valentine is done
Here but now they're gone
Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity...
Romeo and Juliet

40,000 men and women everyday... Like Romeo and
Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday... Redefine
happiness
Another 40,000 coming everyday...We can be like
they are

Come on baby... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby take my hand... Don't fear the Reaper
We'll be able to fly... Don't fear the Reaper
Baby I'm your man...

Love of two is one
Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear we couldn't go on
The door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew and then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared
Saying don't be afraid

Come on baby... And we had no fear
And we ran to him... Then we started to fly
We looked backward and said goodbye
We had become like they are
We had taken his hand
We had become like they are

Come on baby...don't fear the reaper

Never Too Late by Three Days Grace
it's kind of recent but it's still a good song about suicide

There's no mistake I smell that smell It's that time of year again I can taste the air The clocks go back railway track Something blocks the line again and the train runs late for the first time. A pebble beach, we're underneath Pier had just been painted red Where I heard the news for the first time and all the friends lay down the flowers Sit on the banks and drink for hours Talk of the way they saw him last Local boy in the photograph . . . today He'll always be twenty-three yet that train runs on and on Past the place they found his clothing There's no mistake I smell that smell It's that time of year again I can taste the air The clocks go back railway track Something blocks the line again and the train runs late for the first time. . . today And all the friends lay down the flowers Sit on the banks and drink for hours Talk of the way they saw him last Local boy in the photograph . . . today. He's gone away -
