Hi my daughter was the very same she was on sma gold and i changed brands to aptmil which help a lot, trick it did it for her too, also he may be needing a wee drink of cooled boiled water if he is formula fed, many will say that it is not safe but i promise you that it is, my daughter has taken water from day one in the hospital and loves a drink as she is used to it. You can try a little bit of brown sugar to make it more appealingto her, make sure the water is luke warm it really helps. Some babies dont take it as it has no taste and havent been introduced to it. My daughter was prescibed lactoluse and was to take 2.5mls until symptoms cleared, ask to make sure it is ok for this baby though. A warm dath can help things along and massage the tummy too. Or when making up his feeds i.e if she takes a 3oz feed make it up 4oz water to 3oz formula, that way she is getting extra water and the milk is weakened a bit so remember she may get a bit hungry a bit sooner, That worked for my daughter too. That was recommended by my health visitor. I hope this info has been helpful. My daughter is 10months now and everyone of these methods have worked for her. Now she just has an apple or a pear to do the trick. Take care xx

is he breast fed or formula fed? if breast fed: you may think he's constipated when he may not be. breastfed babies can go up to 7 days without pooping since breastmilk is almost completely absorbed and has readily no waste. if formula fed: formula is a lot harder on babies digestive systems than breastmilk. it may be the TYPE of formula that you are using that is causing this, and you may just need to switch to another mixture. this would be something to talk to your dr. about. some tips to help with pain: massage baby's tummy in CLOCKWISE circles, this will help digestion and sooth with your touch. if it persists you might try baby laxatives- ask a pharmacist which ones to try....good luck!

The karo syrup in her bottle is a great idea... thats what I would use with my kids, it's so much more gentle than the little tummy's laxative but, if it's too bad... then the baby laxative might be a good idea if it goes on for a couple more days (I would aske my dr. about the laxative first... she might be too young for it). Also, I would lay them on their back and bend their legs (do it so that her knees touch her belly) then straighten them out... be gentle and do this for about 5-10 minutes at a time (I would do it 3-5 times a day).... this manipulation will help her to poop. Thats what I've done with my 4 week old and it works and is so much more gentle than anything else you could do.

The least addictive/damaging remedies are the rectal ones. When he's straining and screaming, put a baby-size glycerin suppository in him - or insert a small sliver of plain ivory soap up his butt (lubricated first). Either one will make him do a smelly in a few minutes.

Drink sterilised water and massage, Use oil (olive or sunflower and only apply the same amount of pressure as a relaxed hand - eg don't press hard) the tummy region in a clockwise direction.

Iused to give mine a drop or two of pure orange..also and this sounds horrid but does work, is using the same principle as animals, they stimulate their young to make them poo. If they are very constipated, you could try wiping his bottom or gently massaging his perinium...i hope that doesnt sound pervy, but honestly it does work and with young babies like this you are very limited in what you can do. good luck heres hoping for a result.

its normal for babies to scream, cry, grunt, turn red, and all sorts of things when they have a bowel movement.
How does she know he's constipated? Unless he hasnt pooped in over 4 days, or he's passing little pellets he's not stopped up, he's just normal.
If she's sure he's constipated she can give him a couple tablespoons of baby safe water.

At 18 days old my baby had not opened her bowels for 9 days. The Doctor gave a prescription for lactulose and told us to give her 1ml twice a day if she had not opened bowels for 14 days. I cannot tell you effectiveness as she went before the 14 days and so lactulose was not required.

My babysitter when i was little used to give the babies a teaspoon of prune juice. It worked but I would clear it with a doctor first.

go to the drugstore and buy baby glyercin suppositories, gently insert in the baby's rectum, use some vaseline. My son, and my daughter both were this way. I would then lay them on the floor on an blanket with the diaper loose around his belly, as the suppository melts the baby will then have his pooh. This is natural...and both of mine were this way and they were both breastfed babies.
