Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body.

Carbon dioxide dissolves in the blood to form carbonic acid, which dissociates into bicarbonate ion and H ion. So carbon dioxide-bicarbonate form a buffer system to control the pH to 7.4.
