You have to change the fractions in each equation to a common denominator. For example, in # 1 the lowest common denominator of 2 and 5 is 10, so you have to change each fraction to 10ths, which means you will have:
2 5/10 - 1 4/10 = 1 1/10 when you do the subtraction (2 - 1 = 1 and 5/10 - 4/10 = 1/10.
For #2 the lowest common denominator of 8 and 4 is 8, so you will have:
3 3/8 - 1 2/8 =
And for # 3 the lowest common denominator of 6 and 5 is 30, so you will have:
2 25/30 - 1 12/30 =
I hope this helps. Ask your teacher to explain it again if you don't understand how to get the LCD - lowest common denominator. Best of luck with it.

1. 1 1/10
2. 2 1/8
3. 1 13/30
First you make the numbers into fractions, like 2 1/2 is 5/2. Then you get a common denominator between the two fractions you are subtracting or adding. For example the common denominator of 5/2 and 7/5 is 10, so you would have 25/10 - 14/10. Then you subtract the numerators keeping the denominators the same, so 25/10 -14/10 = 11/10. Then simplify your answer, 11/10 = 1 1/10.

You need a common denominator (that is the number on the bottom of the fraction) so
2 1/2 = 5/2 = 25/10
1 2/5 = 7/5 = 14/10
so 25/10 - 14/10 = 11/10 = 1 1/10
2
3 3/8 = 27/8
1 1/4 = 5/4 = 10/8
27/8 - 10/8 = 17/8 =2 1/8
3
2 5/6 = 17/6 = 85/30
1 2/5 = 7/5 = 42/30
83/30 - 42/30 = 41/30 = 1 11/30

here's an example of how to do this. i'll give you the answer for number 1.
#1. first you find the lowest common denominator.
so, you have 2 and 5 as common denominators. so the lowest common denominator is 10.
#2. since there are two whole numbers for the first fraction, you get twenty. and then half of ten is 5. so all together you get twenty five. 25/10
and then you do the same for the other side.
14/10.
25/10 - 14/10 = 11/10
#3. then you have to switch it back to whole numbers and fractions and such.
1 1/10
#4. reduce.
since you cannot reduce the fraction in the equation above, you leave it as it is.

to subtract you have they have to have the same denominators...first make it an improper fraction, then determine a similar denominator (for #1 it would be 10), so just multiply top and bottoms by what it takes to get ten, then subtract, I will do the first one, then you're on your own:
2 1/2 - 1 2/5=
5/2 - 7/5=
(5/2) (5/5) - (7/5) (2/2) =
25/10 - 14/10 = 11/10 = 1 1/10

Ummm....I think the answer to number 1 is 1 1/10, #2 is 2 1/8, and #3 is 1 13/30?
Sorry, it's been so long I can't remember how to do them either. I think those are right, but I might be going about it wrong.
Good luck!

you multiple the denominator to get common denominator
you have to multiple the top to but do not worry about the whole #

Use a calculator.
Turn the fractions into decimals by dividing the numerator by the denominator. And the whole number stays a whole number.
