Can any suggest which IT certification is the wisest to pursuit first? I was thinking of investing time and money to obtain a MCSE 2003 but not sure if that is the wisest, now that Microsoft will release a new server OS in the 2008. I have been doing network engineers and IT support for the last 9 years.

Thank,

Ultimately, it depends on where you live. The industry seems to focus on different regions of the country. It sounds like, with your experience, A+ would fit nicely. It doesn't always command the highest salary, but it would get you a job almost anywhere. If you want to go into networking, MCSE and CCNA are both good. I just passed my CCNA exam and am interviewing. I would say that CCNA has a real edge where I live.

My rule of thumb is I only get certifications as I need them or if the company is paying for them.

I don't have any certifications yet, so that tells you something. However, database, cisco and PMP certifications seem to be in high demand where I live.

I'd look at the want ads to see what people are requiring.

Ultimately, if you're marketable, you can ask for more money because you're worth it. If your pay doesn't advance, the certification makes it easier to find someone who will pay you what you're worth.

Personally, I'd do a degree over a certification. A degree opens up a lot more options.

I used to teach certification courses for 5 years and I will agree with what had been presented, if you don't need it or will beinifit from it skill wise pr monetarily wise don't waste your time.

Most IT compnaies will pay for your cert and give you a raise if you obtain a cert. This is to make their services more attractive ro their cutomers as they can ovver "certified" services.

If you say you have been wokring in IT for 9 years your expereice will speak for itself. Unloess you changes jobs I would pursue it.

If you do, the best route to go is MCSE 2003 or MCSA the MCSA is a systems engineer with out the specialty exams, IE Exchange or SQL. If I were you take SQL take as much as you can in SQL as EVERYTHING uses SQL and the MS O/S is going to integrate SQL into it as this will maintain AD moving forward.

Just my 2 cents and good luck.

Have you considered going for a real degree? (or do you already have one?)
