Your best bet on this one is to compare feathers with everything on your list.

Feathers cover the body of the bird. Hide covers the body of an animal. Hmm. Lets put this one in the maybe pile.

Feathers cover the body of the bird. Scales cover the body of a reptile. Hmm. Lets put this one in the maybe pile.

Feathers cover the body of the bird. Joints are only where the skeleton allows for movement. Hmm. That is not like feathers at all. Nope, this one does not go into the pile.

Feathers cover the body of the bird. Claws are only at the end of the appendages. Nope, not like feathers so it does not go into the pile.

That leaves us with A. Hide and B. Scales. Now, a bird has many feathers. The are separate from each other. They are external.

Hide is external but it is one continuous piece. Scales are external and they are composed of a bunch of scales. Feathers are more like scales than anything else on the list.

I vote scales.
