Hmm.. My favorite character out of all would have to be...
Faramir.
You can't help but want to feel sorry for him in the movies. His father treated him with no appreciation, or respect whatsoever. He knew that his father favored Boromir...And Faramir always tried to show Denethor that he was able to do the same heroic things that his brother could do, but he (Denethor) never took his abilities to mind. After all of the dispair and almost dying for an impossible mission, Faramir met Eowyn. And they ended up living "happily-ever-after" in the land of Southern Ithilien.
:)
My second favorite would have to be..
Eowyn.
She was brave, strong and such a noble character. One that would stop at nothing when it came down to something she truely believed in.
Eowyn & Faramir really are the perfect couple in the LotR trilogy (my oppinion). Both having a troublesome life, and now they've finally found their happiness, which is with eachother. I couldn't have been happier myself. :)

My third character would be...
Sam.
If only we had TRUE friends like him in real-life...I'd be so happy.
He was always there for Frodo, and was brave & courageous. He really did care about his friends, and would almost die for them.
And then there's Merry and Pippin.
They're one of my favorites because they're humorous and silly (almost stupid at times). But yet, they still had the bravery and courage that got them to the end.
<3
I hate to be so in-depth with why they're my favorites...but that's really why they are, lol.

My favorite character is Samwise. I read LotR for the first time when I was in middle school, where I was pretty much a social outcast. The thought of having such a true, unconditional friend -- with you no matter what -- as Sam was to Frodo was, to me, a rather foreign but captivating concept. Sam is one of those characters that I just sort of consider that he would be my friend, if he was real. There are a lot of those...
The rest of my top five are Faramir (honestly, how can anyone who has read the books not love Faramir?), Eowyn (girl power, WOOT!), Merry and Pippin (because they're funny and sweet and tough and all-around great).

Faramir; I always had a thing for Faramir.
He's smart, and booky, and good, and wise. He was so good and wise, he was able to overcome the power of the ring. He did everything he could to help Frodo, even though his actions were marginally illegal.
And was I PO-ed at the movie(s); they completely changed the whole thing about him compared to his brother, and added that bit about him starting to take them to Minas Tirith.
grr, argh!
(I never thought Eowyn was good enough for him.)
I also love Treebeard (and his buddy, the "hasty" ent, whose name I forget). Oooo! Quickbeam!
Edit to add more about Faramir: he's the closest thing to a pacifist in Middle Earth, which I also admire. (Can't quite be a pacifist, but he doesn't at all like violence.)
Yes, Merry, and Pippin, as many have said, because they're fun, yet THERE when the chips are down.
And, although not fond of Eowyn, as I said, I am happy that Faramir is happy, and gets to live in the place he loves most, and doesn't have to be the leader of Gondor, which he never wanted.
And, yes, his dad was a big, dumb jerk and major poo-poo head.

this is such a great question! really stopped and made me think. based on the films i would have to say merry and pippin... they help to keep it not seriousand bring a bit of laughter to the films
based on the books i would have to say Eowyn, she is such a beautiful character. with her quiet grace and steely determination! i just love the way she doesnt take no for an answer and that shes a strong woman...damsels in distress just arent my cup of tea.
legolas was another favourite of mine from the book,he comes acroos completely different in the film though which is a shame...goodthing though, in the film he is played by a complete hottie!! =P
i wonder...whos your favourite character then?

My Favorite Character would have to be Sam. He's the true hero of the story, always there, faithfully saving Froda and never in spite of Frodos craze never turns his back on Frodo. True Friend, True Hero
My daughter who is four is in love with Frodo, she calls him Frodo Baggins Handsome Boy..and loves to imitate Gollum.she creeps around all of the time saying "my precious"
In fact some times she hides like under the bed or various places and jumps out saying hobbitses Hobbitses,

I always liked Tom Bombadil, though he had no major part in the story, I really liked the part of the book he was included in as an entertaining sidenote. I have not yet read "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil" but one day plan to in the future.

Theoden. Shrugs off the impact of years of treachery & stagnation of state of being inactive to steer the pony companies assembled by using his ancestors to victory against substantial & before unconquered forces & die in harness as a replace of an invalid mattress. How good do you should be? And his corridor rocked.

I have to go with Merry and Pippin. They are hilarious and very witty...in a funny way. =]
Next would probably be Aragorn. I don't really know why I like him, i just like how he's so good on the swords. xD

Theyre all rly cool, but my favorite has to be Legolas.
To start off, he's hot hehe =)
But other than that, i like his dry sense of humor and his flawless dexterity. A very cool character overall.
