Even if you tax alcohol at 300% of it's actual value, people will still buy it.
Look at petrol for proof.
The politicians would have you believe that taxes are levied to combat problems caused by the use of taxed products, but if anyone buys into anything other than taxes being a revenue stream, they're dreaming.
I really wouldn't mind if I could see our taxes being used sensibly, but when you see some of the hare-brained schems being funded by government in favour of routine maintenance of existing systems, I despair.
Tax only makes people poorer, not healthier.

I always think this is laughable. Countries like France which have low tax on alcohol have very little binge drinking (alcohol is not a luxury item and therefore children are brought up around it and have a more normalised relationship to it). Further as tax on drink in the UK has increased binge drinking has increased. If I was in government and looking to reduce binge drinking I know what I'd do - hint not increase tax on drink!

It is so sad when i see the younger members of society being so heavily taxed, but the realism is someone must pay for all the alcohol related crime, but it is a shame that good people have to pay for all the hospital treatment of drug people who just havn,t a clue what they are doing. How would we stop them from being so proud of themselves, and infecting some poor other children.Do we keep laughing at drunken ladies, and support people on drugs through our excellent DSS and NHS Are there to many organisations and help centres that just say ok here,s your drugs, don,t commit a crime and come back when you want some more. What can we do,apparently its funny to be off your noddle all day and all the DSS do is give them more. Its so despairing,i can,t laugh at them, they are a burden, where will it end.

Don't worry about it...it isn't going to happen. While you can be pretty sure a minority of your state and federal legislators smoke, a large majority of them enjoy a cocktail or two every now and then and their not motivated to pay that extra tax at "happy hour".
On the other hand, they may figure out a way to tax the cheap stuff since they wouldn't touch it anyway.

No; I do not think there should be an increase of taxes. I would really like to know who these particular people are and what their cause is." Let's meet the lobbyists".

If the government think they can gain extra money by raising taxes then they will do it regardless of what you or i think.
Raising the taxes on alcohol for the purpose of stopping young people binge drinking is a stupid idea...they will simply get the extra money from somewhere to buy the overpriced alcohol.
It is yet another way of taking money from the workers of the country who enjoy a few drinks with their friends.
What will be taxed next...?

may be you should ask yourself what you would do or how you would deal with the situation we see regularly on the TV, young people lads/ lasses paralytic on the streets after binge drinking, many time fighting with both Police, and sometimes ambulance staff. Plus giving aggravation to the A&E dpt Staff.things have got to alter in this area. Taxes high enough may just, be the answer.

With the benefit of most politicians 20/20 hindsight, they have suddenly realised that banning smoking has killed the tax revenue golden goose. Puritan Brown (AKA Stalin) wants us all to be cowering automatons. Expect huge tax rises on alcohol.

Sure, increase it. Use the taxes collected to help state programs that need it (in my state, that's education). They're not banning smoking, they're restricting it to private places; if you ban something entirely, it increases its value on the black market (like speakeasies with prohibition). Increase the tax until an alcoholic has to decide between buying booze or buying gas; that should also reduce the number of drunk drivers on the streets.

No, what I think is that when they put all the tax on our cigarettes, they should have given us a double brandy to get over the shock. I think that they should increase the alcohol on tax rather than..hic..burp..pardon the other fa..t pardon way round.
