I have a friend who has been in a coma for almost 3 weeks, but he is breathing on his own and not relying on machines to live, except for feeding. Yesterday, he opened his eyes and mouth, it looked like he was trying to talk but nothing but drool came out. He has been in a coma for a long time...will he survive this? If he opened his eyes, is he still considered to be in a coma?

Someone was saying that they didnt know how he got hurt in the first place...well he was driving down a twisty turny street late at night and crashed into a huge tree. Some people passing by called 911. The car was pretty messed up and they had to cut him out of it! He had no airbag and hit his head on the steering wheel.

I am sorry for ur friends situation,
God bless him.
The signs are good, indicating his survival & will to live.
Spend as much time as u can with him, keep talking to him about the old days full of fun, goodness, tell him stories of brave people, survivers, to encourage him, people in coma do listen so talk about all the good things.
Too check his reports & discuss with doctors.
once he is out of it , he's gotts learn things again, depending upon the loss.
best of luck
may God heal him

You can still be in a coma with the eyes open and even appear to be responding. You will have to depend on the doctors for information. They can measure his brain patterns and know how much he is surfacing. I do believe that if they are resurfacing they can hear you. So he family is best to talk to him, read, sing anything so he can hear and have something to lock onto. People can return from a coma. However, that return is often not a complete return. It just depends on the damage done to the brain and every case can be so different. Hang on to hope and keep talking.

Technically, yes. Sometimes people in comas have involuntary movement. So it depends on the movement of the eyes. If his eyes were focused or not. Even dead bodies open their eyes.

Physicians generally have a six month wait-and-see period. If he goes longer than six months with no improvement, then the signs are bad.

But no one on here is going to be able to give you a real answer because we don't know how he was injured in the first place.

if his eyes are still open, no more coma. My best friend was in a coma for 17 days... she woke up. She had to learn to talk, walk, eat... everything again. She now walks fine, talks a little different, but just fine, and has a full time job and lives a pretty normal life. Best of luck to your friend!

My friend was like this also. She hit her head in a car accident and was in a commo for llike 3 weeks also. She had to go to rehab to learn how to talk, eat, and walk. She can take baby steps now and she is working on the talking. Its been since 6months though and it has been hard.

I am sorry, I do not have the answer for you. You could ask his doctor or his family.
