Im redoing my home network. Currently I use a Linksys wifi router.

I now Have a server and the router I have doesnt have a built in swith soo the data from pc a to the server actually gets sent threw the enternet at 500kbs speed which takes years for a gig file.

So what I was think was Incorperation a Switch in my room only since I have.
2 Computer/ File Server/ Xbox 360 that I use with Media Center/Ps3.

The swith I want to buy is http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115416906263&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=0626367879B18

Now here are my questions.

1. Do I hook up my five things to the swith than have a cord from the router hook up to the swith.

2. Where on this switch would I plug the router cable into.

Heres a pic of what I want to do.

I have the server on the router its just when I transfer files to it they upload at like 50kbs instead of just routing the data to it it sends it threw the internet.

first and foremost, you can connect the file server to the router directly so that it gets better bandwidth. your network layout is ok. where to connect the switch?? firs find an empty slot on the router that says LAN X (X=1 to 4). connect the switch there and the switch is now to be connected to PC A, PC B and 360. then just follow your design and you should do just fine.

I recommend using automated Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to automatically assign Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to the computers on your network, if your network supports it. If you use DHCP, then you don't have to change your settings if you move your computer to another location, and DHCP doesn't require you to manually configure settings such as Domain Name System (DNS) and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS).

I am going to venture to guess that your router is the typical Linksys 4 port router switch, based on your drawing.

If this is the case it really dont matter a whole lot what you plug into what as your infrastructure is very small. But to keep it simple I take your modem and plug it into your router and then from there up link that to your workgroup switch and then star out to your PCs and Xbox. I would plug your server right into the router if you have free ports on it as it will most likely have the most traffic on it.
