I don't get drunk or obnoxious and it doesn't upset my wife, but I have more than the recommended amount, and I have expensive tastes (fine ales, single malts, vintage ciders). I would like to drink less but seem to just be in a rut with it or something.

Thanks for the answers so far. I don't go out to drink, so that's not a problem. The killing brain cells idea is a myth (there's no evidence that drinking does this), and as I understand it it takes a LOT to damage your liver, so that's not a deterrent. I don't think I need anything as serious as AA - but maybe I'm wrong. I dunno.

If you want to quit drinking you will quit. Apparently you like to drink and you are convincing yourself that you cannot control the amount you take in. If you want to reduce intake you have to change your desire. No amount of advise is going to help.

Yes find another hobby to take up the time. Save the money you would have spent either in a separate bank account or in a money jar (or even just write it down). Once you see how much you've saved (and then spent on your new hobby lol) you will want to keep it up! Also allow yourself a special drink once a week and really savour it. Just try cutting down the amount you do drink eg 4 pints instead of 5 and see how that goes. Godd luck!

Well you are doing your body some damage. You loose brain cells every time you have a drink. And you are doing damage to your liver. Both of these body parts are pretty important to your health and well being. Drinking less will lengthen your life and quality of life. And those funds you are spending could be invested in a better place.

Attend AA. Find a hobby. Replace it with a healthier habit. Figure out what prompts you to drink, i.e. boredom, loneliness, for relaxation, and replace it with an activity that fulfills the same purpose. I replaced my drinking and smoking with meditation and spending time with non-drinking friends. I also attend AA/NA which helps tremendously. The AA/NA books are awesome too.

Ask yourself if it would cause you more 'pain' or 'pleasure' in the long run. It will take some work, so bear it in mind.
Try to find a substitute for it.
Also see if there's a support forum online.
Hope this helps.

You should obviously grow some "special" plants at home.
