i had a colection agent come to my house and put a letter in y mail box. my neigbot told me it is illegal to place anything in soeone elses mail box is this true?

Yes, the mailbox is for official mail only. However, you will probably not be able to make a federal case out of it. People leave stuff in mailboxes all the time.

If your letter carrier comes across anything in your box like a note, letter, flyer ect and it doesnt have postage on it. He/she is suppose to bring it back into the post office and that person is contacted about it. Sometimes it is sent back to them postage due. Your are not suppose to put anything in anyone elses box. As a matter of fact if you left a note for someone in your own box and the letter carrier found it, and it didnt have any postage on it, it should be brought back as well. If you had mail in your box when the agent left the letter that might be considered tampering with someone elses mail.
