My grass was a healthy green color until about a month ago. I don't own any pets and I live in sunny Los Angeles. Now it's turning yellow/brown and thinning out. I water every other day for 10 minutes. Why could this be happening and how do I fix it?

What is the optimal watering length and number of times a week?

You water it every other day? My guess is going to be too much water. An established lawn doesn't need supplemental watering any more than once a week very early in the morning.

EDIT: Optimal watering is once a week for about 2-3 hours.
This will allow the water to seep deeply into the earth promoting longer and stronger root system. Shallow watering keeps the roots at the surface which means they can thirst to death and be damaged by the elements. Go ahead and begin this cycle. Pick a day that you will be able to set out a sprinkler for 2-3 hours and water your yard thoroughly. You really don't need to do this more than once a week unless you have an extreme heat wave. Also, the earlier in the morning the better. This will allow the water to be absorbed instead of evaporating in the afternoon heat. Some say water at night, but that's not good because fungus and molds develop when the blades of grass do not get dry within a few hours. You need the sun to dry the grass off after being watered.

Good Luck

You are definately watering it too often and 10 minutes is too short. Next time you water, set a cup out in the yard so it catches some of the water. This way you can see how deep you may be watering. How much water does your lawn need? Well that is going to depend on what type of grass you have. Check with your local cooperative extension office. Google it for your county and call them.
