Yes.

You can put alcoholics, drug addicts, illegal aliens and gluttons on the list too.

The problem is that most smokers today started when there was not the public awareness so I think it is up to the tobacco companies to put a large chunk into the medical support programs to help pay.

i have no problem, being a smoker, if rates are adjusted accordingly. but would that not open the flood gates for drivers with multiple offenses, extreme sports athelets, drinkers or almost anyone with a vice. smokers already pay a higher rate and the taxes collected from tabacco sales often fund school projects, scholarships and several other funds. so we are already paying out more.

Smokers already pay higher health and life insurance premiums.

And, I'm with roadhazzard on this one, if it would get me everything I've paid in back with interest, I'd not only support it, I'd start smoking.

Are you refering to the people who already pay more taxes than non smokers?

How about this one. Should a tax payer who has no kids pay for public education.

Might as well do that for people who drink soda every day or eat disgusting amounts of unhealthy foods, or people who are obese, etc.... It's sad knowing that I am paying higher medical bills because many people don't take care of themselves.

Sure as long as every penny they've been forced to pay into such programs plus the interest it would have earned is returned to them. I'd do the same thing for alcoholics and drug users as well.

I have a big problem with these jokers that turn up at the hospital coughing up blood after doing 3 packs of Pal Mals a day for thirty years.
But they should be taken care of anyway...its the right thing to do.

Personal responsibility should start with our government explaining why an addictive drug (cigarettes) are legal to sell. Tobacco companies should be seized by the government in order to pay for their destructive products.
Stop funding government programs from cigarette taxes which fall mostly on the poor.
