What is the point of a sound card?

Why do people buy these? Is it a necessity when building a pc?

If your motherboard doesn't come with integrated sound, you'll need a sound card.

Normally, the only sound that your computer can make without a sound card is a beep from the case speaker that you plug into the motherboard.

If you want to plug in real speakers, listen to music, hear audio when you watch movies, play games, or surf the web, you'll need a sound card.

Some motherboards have integrated sound, which means the sound card is built into the motherboard. In that case, you only need a sound card if you want better features than the integrated sound provides.

I wasn't able to use my integrated sound for movie editing because the card was a little slow, which caused a lag in the audio when I played video back. It was a problem because I could never tell if the lag was from my computer or a problem with the source. So, I needed to buy a higher end sound card that advertised zero lag.

If your motherboard has onboard sound and you don't intend to do any sound/music editing, then it will work fine. If you do intend to edit music then an upgraded sound card with all the proper inputs is what you want.

if your motherboard doesn't have a built-in sound card.. you will need to buy a sound card for your pc to produce sound otherwise you will have no place to plug your PC-speaker or headset

Nowadays motherboards have a soundcard built-in, but if it's not good enough for the owner he can buy a better.
