our speakers were working last week but quit i can here them working but when i try to listen to music it says that there is no audio device or hardware detected how could i get the computer to acknowledge the hardware i have an hp with xp windows

This is a common problem. Get the latest audio drivers and try to update them (in the control panel under System or hardware). If they don't update properly, uninstall them and wait for windows to recognise the device and it'll install them again (you may have to specify a location so it doesn't use the old drivers).

Go to the Device Manager and see if there is a yellow exclamation or question mark where the sound is listed. If so, then your sound driver has stopped working. To repair this just reinstall that driver. It can be found on the disk that came with the motherboard or on the Restore disk for your computer. If you don't have these disks, do a search at your computer manufacturers web page for the driver. Download and install it. That should fix the problem.

Try going to add new hardware and see if xp can detect it.otherwise just try unplugging your system for about 10 mins and plug it back in.

something is probably conflicting with your adiocard. Look in your control panels under settings and devices and see if you need to update the driver

to be honest i dont know anything about the audio systems, but you could try restoring your PC to a date when they were working,
To restore your PC click "Start", "all Programs" "accessories" "Systems Tools" and then select "system restore" and follow the instructions given
